Stories That Soar! will kick off its new season at Mesquite Elementary School on August 29, at 9 a.m. Stories That Soar! is part of Literacy Connects, a local organization dedicated to community literacy.
Established in 2005 by Sharon O’Brien, Stories That Soar! transforms original student stories stories into live theatrical productions. This allows students to unleash their imaginations and experience the creative connection in literacy. And so, the results are productions that are full of a child’s true and honest thoughts and feelings.
“Sharon’s influence and partnership has allowed us to soar in our own way,” said Collins. “Our writing scores went up, after the 1st year of Stories That Soar! at Mesquite. We broadened our Enrichment Learning Program to include an advanced math, art and writing centers in the Media Center. We included our very own Gilly the Gila Monster, who sits in our Media Center always hungry for stories too. And we have seen theatre students at Empire, performs these stories for our students. None of these things would have been possible without Sharon and her big imagination and drive in making the impossible, possible.”
Last year, Mesquite students fed the Magic Box 900 stories. This year, they fed the Magic Box 1,191 stories! And due to the new Chinese Immersion program at Mesquite, a Chinese theme will be part of this year’s production.
