National Merit® Scholarship Program Semifinalists hail from Dobson, Mountain View and Westwood high schools.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced six Mesa Public Schools seniors were named Semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit® Scholarship Program. Less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide are eligible.

The district Semifinalists are:

Rick A. Hewitt and Robert J. Walls from Dobson High
Austin K. LeSueur from Mountain View High
Madeline F. Jones, Brandon J. Ritter and Paige M. Zuraw from Westwood High

According to the sponsoring organization, these academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.
