Peoria Unified student wins regional spelling bee

The Maricopa County Region IV Spelling Bee took place on Friday, Feb. 19 and Peoria Unified is proud to celebrate two winners in the regional competition. Braedyn Matthews, an eighth-grade student from Heritage Elementary School in Peoria became the Region IV champion with the winning word, “extinguish.” Christine Koenig, an eighth-grade student from Foothills Elementary School also secured third place in the regional competition.

The Spelling Bee was streamed live and anyone unable to watch the event Friday can view it on-demand on the district’s YouTube channel.

Matthews will advance to the state Spelling Bee in March. Then twenty-seven students from across the state will move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. the summer of 2021.
