Bag The Bench

Several Higley Unified School District elementary schools took part in the recent “Bench the Bag” program designed by the Town of Gilbert and Trex (a recycling company.)

In all, 19 schools in Gilbert competed to collect unwanted soft plastic bags, like those at grocery stores and dry cleaners.

Power Ranch Elementary School collected the third-highest number of bags per student.

In all, Power Ranch collected 1,047 pounds of plastic bags. The school was also recognized by the Town of Gilbert as the school with “the most community support” in the recycling effort.

Higley Traditional Academy, which collected the sixth-highest number of bags per student, was recognized as the “friendliest” school in the competition.

Chaparral Elementary School and Coronado Elementary School also participated. Chaparral earned the title “Coolest Welcoming Committee” and Coronado – dubbed the best at “bag compaction” – collected the eighth-highest number of bags per student.

Altogether, 19 Gilbert schools collected 12,410 pounds of soft plastic bags – about 930,783 individual bags. The bags will be used to make other items, such as outdoor furniture.
