The Arizona Teacher Residency Is Beginning The Process Of Forming Its Second Cohort Of Future Arizona Teachers.

The Arizona Teacher Residency is beginning the process of forming its second cohort of future Arizona teachers. Modeled after medical residencies, the Arizona Teacher Residency prepares aspiring teachers with a rigorous graduate education, a yearlong classroom apprenticeship, and ongoing professional learning.

Steps to apply are already posted at aztr.org, and an upcoming virtual event will help potential residents learn more about the program. A virtual information session on November 16 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. will provide anyone interested in applying to the Arizona Teacher Residency with more information about the program and the details of the application process. To attend, please register through aztr.org.

An initiative through the Arizona K12 Center at Northern Arizona University supported by the Arizona Department of Education, the Arizona Teacher Residency is open to any U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a bachelor’s degree from any field interested in making a difference in Arizona students’ lives.

“Addressing our state’s dire teacher shortage requires multiple strategies. The Arizona Teacher Residency is already helping local districts fill critical positions and providing robust support for these teachers as they enter classrooms,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman. “The Arizona Department of Education is proud to partner with the NAU K12 Center on this innovative program.”

The program begins with a summer institute, followed by a year of in-school apprenticeship under a supervising teacher before residents become the teacher-of-record in their second year in the program. Residents will complete graduate coursework throughout the two years and, upon completion, receive a master’s degree from Northern Arizona University. Along with this highly subsidized master’s degree, residents receive a living stipend during the residency year and receive a salary from the district during the year as the teacher-of-record. In exchange, residents commit to serving in partner districts for at least three years beyond their residency year. During those years, residents receive wrap-around professional learning opportunities offered by the Arizona K12 Center.

“It is inspiring to watch our current cohort of residents develop into excellent educators,” said Victoria Theisen-Homer, director of the Arizona Teacher Residency. “We are so excited about growing the program with a new and larger cohort of passionate and committed aspiring teachers. We encourage people from all walks of life to apply and look forward to meeting so many new faces this year.”

The Arizona Teacher Residency is in its first year with the first cohort of residents teaching at Osborn School District, Roosevelt School District, and Tempe Elementary School District.
