Massive fire underneath Northern KentuckyCincinnati bridge shuts down interstate

An early Friday morning fire near the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge that connects Northern Kentucky to Cincinnati closed the crossing as crews were fighting the major fire.

The Cincinnati Fire Department reported to the scene at approximately 3:30 a.m. when a vehicle caught fire near the I-471 bridge, spreading fast and engulfing a park playground. Flames were rising so high that the bridge was closed immediately.

Some routes are closed due to the fire.

The ramps on I-275 eastbound at mile point 75.37 and on I-275 westbound at mile point 74.55 onto I-471 northbound are closed.

Detours on I-471 Northbound: Cars on KY 471 northbound from Highland Heights are advised to exit to I-275 on the westbound side at mile point 0.453 or the eastbound side at mile point 0.37

Other Exits Closed: All entrance and exit ramps for I-471 northbound, including for Alexandria Pike, Grand Avenue, Memorial Parkway, and Dave Cowens Drive, remain closed.

Safety workers told motorists to steer off the bridge in either direction by using I-275.

KYTC and the Ohio Department of Transportation immediately sent their personnel to inspect the bridge for any damage but set no date for reopening the bridge.
