Western School of Science and Technology: A Challenge Foundation Academy (“Western: CFA”) celebrated its official Grand Opening with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony January 29, 2015.

Over 500 stakeholders, community partners, family members, staff, and students were on hand to celebrate the momentous occasion. Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane, Arizona Charter Schools Association President Eileen Sigmund, Maryvale Revitalization Corporation President Dwight Amery, and Maryvale Hospital Center CEO Crystal Hamilton were among the local dignitaries to attend.

“This is the continuation of a promise made by TeamCFA, a national organization of high-performing charter schools, to transform the Maryvale community through education,” said Founding School Director Peter Boyle during his remarks during the event.

Additional aspects of the program included remarks by Challenge Foundation Properties President Ruppert Reinstadler, New Schools For Phoenix Director Andrew Collins, and Western: CFA Board President Robert “Drew” Shaw, as well as performances by the student chorus and robotics team.

In addition, over 85 students were recognized by earning Honors or High Honors on their report cards during Western: CFA’s second quarter.
The event was held in conjunction with National School Choice Week, as one of over 9,000 schools participating in the largest celebration of school choice events nationwide.

The goal of the week is to shine a positive spotlight on all types of education options for children—from traditional public schools to public charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online learning and homeschooling.

“We are excited to have WSST: CFA participate in National School Choice Week with this special event,” said Andrew Campanella, National School Choice Week President. “It is because of great events like this that National School Choice Week, in Arizona and across the country, will break records as the largest and most influential celebration of educational opportunity in American history.”

Western: CFA is proud to serve over 240 students in grades 7, 8, and 9. Western: CFA is a part of the New Schools For Phoenix initiative, which aims to double the number of seats available in high-quality schools for students in Phoenix’s urban core, as well as a member of TeamCFA. Western: CFA welcomed its first classes in August of 2014.
