A fire overnight damaged a United States Postal Service (USPS) collection box and its contents in Phoenix, causing concerns about whether any mail-in ballots were destroyed in the blaze.
The fire started about 2 a.m. in a USPS collection box near 7th Street and Indian School Road. Firefighters found the iconic blue mailbox charred and damaged when they arrived.
News reporters in Arizona reported seeing investigators take out mail inside, including some green envelopes from the mailbox, which was used mainly for ballots. It is still unknown if any of the mail which got damaged by the fire happen to be ballots.
The collection box is on USPS property, and officials said surveillance footage would be very helpful in assisting the investigation. Other officials continue to look at the cause and extent of damage that may have occurred to the mail inside.
