Peoria students spell their way to regionals

The Annual District Spelling Bee was held at the Peoria Unified School District’s Administration Center on Friday, Jan. 24 where top spellers from across the district competed in front of their peers.

The top speller and seven runner-ups will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee in February.

The winner of the Annual District Spelling Bee is Abel Cherian from Marshall Ranch Elementary School. Cherian won against Apache Elementary’s Cameron Deal in the 22nd round with the word geranium.

The seven runner-ups include:

  • Ben Bewley from Vistancia Elementary School
  • Alyssa Carillo from Sahuaro Ranch Elementary School
  • Elysia Casper from Peoria Traditional School
  • Cameron Deal – Apache Elementary School
  • Annalise Dilts from Copperwood Elementary School
  • Noah Manumaleuga from Alta Loma Elementary School
  • BeBee Obando from Zuni Hills Elementary School

These eight exceptional students will compete in the Regional Bee hosted by the district on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Cactus High School.

The winners of the Regional Bee will move on to the state-level Arizona Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 29, followed by the Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C. the summer of 2014.
