Gayles named Phoenix Union assistant superintendent

Michelle Gayles

Michelle Gayles has been named the Assistant Superintendent of Operations for the Phoenix Union High School District. The Governing Board approved the appointment at the June 24 board meeting. She begins her assignment, July 14.

Gayles will supervise the operations division, including technology and information services, research, facility maintenance and operations, facility rentals and transportation. She takes over for Nora Gutierrez, who retired after serving as an assistant superintendent for operations for six years, and human resources for four years in her 15-year Phoenix Union career.

Gayles was the Vice President of Community Impact for the Valley of the Sun United Way. She joined the United Way in 2006. She has served in the health and human services sector for nearly 20 years, managing operations, innovation and technology, and strategic planning.

Gayles is no stranger to education in Phoenix, working on several education-related projects such as Degree Phoenix, Destination Graduation, Arizona College Access Network, College Depot, Arizona Ready High School Graduation Task Force, Arizona’s First Things First and Thriving Together. These initiatives focus on student academic success, youth readiness for post-secondary education and career. She has managed numerous local and state efforts to improve outcomes for children and families.

Scribner said. “She exhibits innovation and creativity, performance and data-driven management skills, team-building, strategic planning and thinking. Gayles has also been the General Business Manager for Sunfire African Art Gallery in Phoenix, and spent 11 years with credit card company MBNA America in Ohio in community relations and training and development.

She holds a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Organizations from Case Western Reserve University and a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and General Business from Miami (of Ohio) University.

A resident of Phoenix, Gayles has one son, who graduated from Phoenix Union’s Bioscience High School.
