Flagstaff students excel at AZ State Chess Championships

This past weekend, at the 2016 Arizona State Scholastic Chess Championships, students from all over Flagstaff played some of their best chess of the year.

The 2016 AZ State Chess Championships were held in Tucson, Arizona over the weekend of April 23, 24.

Each of Killip’s teams were in the running for state champs right up until the last round.  This broke an eight year straight state championship run for Killip. The K-3 and the K-5 teams came away with a 2nd place finish.  K-5 was a half of a point behind first.  K-1 came in third.

Flagstaff students excel at AZ State Chess Championships chess-300x153Sinagua Middle School came in 3rd in K-6 and 9th place in K-9.

Kinsey was 4th in K-6 and Puente de Hohzo was 6th in K-5, with Kinsey coming in 7th in K-5.  DeMiguel tied for 10th place in the K-3 section.  Also homeschool team Muscarella came in 10th place in the K-9 section.

Individual results include:

Killip: Michael Vasquez and Jaiden Smith, 9th place; Skyler Boyce, 18th place; Jasmin Felix and Tayvion Anderson, 22nd; Jamie Herrera, 23rd; Giovani Betran and Gustavo Cardenas,25th

SMS – D’ontye Anderson, 15th place; Julian Billy, 19th place

Sechrist – Jordan McGeary, 10th place
