Carl Hayden High School students were asked to “Speak Like Sparky” in Sparky’s Next Great Public Speakers team speaking competition, sponsored by the ASU Communication Assessment Learning Lab, April 25-26 at ASU West.
The Falcons had the highest overall score and highest originality in the preliminary rounds, and ended up finishing as the first runner-up, or 2nd place in the finals.
Students Gema Trejo, Francisco Gonzalez, and Louis Mendez spent Friday morning working with ASU mentors, then competed Friday afternoon.
They were assigned a topic, a type of visual aid, a research source, a ‘surprise from Sparky’, and just 20 minutes to prepare their presentations.
It was a fast-paced, fun competition.
“We were so close. The kids were disappointed, but vowed to rock it next year,” reading teacher Jeanne LeSage said.
