Due to blowing dust, there was poor visibility on a section of Interstate 10 near Queen Creek on Wednesday evening, according to an announcement made by the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The National Weather Service issued a blowing dust advisory warning for the Phoenix area of south-central and southwest Arizona on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m.
According to the warning, visibility should be between a quarter-mile and a mile, and wind gusts of up to forty miles per hour are predicted. Around 4:30 p.m., ADOT posted a notice on X alerting drivers to low visibility on the freeway close to Queen Creek. Drivers were urged not to drive amid a dust storm in the post.
As per ADOT’s post, the visibility in the vicinity is “very poor.” The message offered advice on what to do in the event of a dust storm while driving.
Strong thunderstorms were being tracked by doppler radar at 5:12 p.m., six miles east of Sentinel and close to Gila Bend. The system was expected to move northwest at 20 mph. Pea-sized hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph were forecast.
The advice given in this case was to slow down and pull over to the side of the road; switch off all lights, including the flashers; engage the parking brake; remove your foot from the accelerator; and remain in the car until the storm passes, strapped up.
