Arizona K12 Center offers funding for 200 teachers seeking National Board Certification
The Arizona K12 Center is excited to announce that through the Arizona Teachers Academy we have funding for 200 teachers to seek National Board Certification.
This funding stream will provide each qualified teacher the financial assistance to pay for all 4 components as well as up to $225 credit for eligible Arizona K12 Center candidate support events, said Kathy Wiebke, NBCT, Ph.D., executive director of Arizona K12 Center.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Arizona’s teachers with the ultimate beneficiaries being our students,” Wiebke said. “We hope your teachers will consider making the 2019-2020 school year the year they pursue National Board Certification.”
To be eligible for Board-certification, teachers must meet the following education, employment, and licensure requirements prior to starting the certification process. Candidates will be asked to verify these during registration.
- Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. (NOTE: Candidates for the Career and Technical Education certificate are required to hold a bachelor’s degree only if their state required one for their current license.)
- Have completed three years of successful teaching in one or more early childhood, elementary, middle, or secondary school.
- Hold a valid state teaching license (or meet the licensure requirements established by your state for a school counselor if applying for the ECYA/School Counseling certificate) for each of the three years of employment you verify.
- Provide official American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) certified ratings of Advanced Low or higher from ACTFL speaking and writing proficiency assessments if registering as a World Languages candidate. Interested teachers must complete the Arizona K12 Center’s National Board Pre-Candidacy class and our National Board Institute. These are designed to set a teacher up for success while bringing greater clarity to the process, expectations, and the NBPTS standards. Our Pre-Candidacy class is offered in schools and districts throughout Arizona.
We also have a hybrid class starting soon with a National Board Institute occurring in November. To make these learning opportunities accessible to as many teachers as possible, we have reduced our fees. Below is information regarding both offerings:
National Board Pre-Candidacy Class
September 14, 2019 – October 26, 2019 (Note: The first and last classes are face-to-face with the remainder online)

Once an eligible teacher completes the Pre-Candidacy Class and National Board Institute, they are eligible for funding for all four components. A teacher can complete the process of Board-certification in 1-3 years. For those teachers who make the decision to pursue National Board Certification and complete the above requirements, there is a National Board Kickoff event that we are requesting all first time candidates attend.
