Officials confirmed that five people are dead after a plane crashed near Falcon Field in Mesa on Tuesday afternoon. The plane, which crashed near the intersection of Greenfield and McKellips Roads, burst into flames and also damaged a nearby vehicle.
The police and fire departments of Mesa arrived at the crash site almost immediately. The plane was covered with flames, while debris covered the entire place. It is still to be ascertained how this accident happened, and names of victims have not been released yet.
As of this evening, McKellips Road is partially open from the east and west – one lane in each direction-only. Greenfield Road is still closed northbound at Brown and southbound at McDowell – drivers are being asked to take detours.
While out hiking at Usery Mountain Regional Park, local Terri Fairfield witnessed smoke and flames emanating from the aftermath of the crash within minutes.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and further updates regarding the information will be communicated as necessary.
