Police looking for suspect in deadly East Nashville attack

The Metro Nashville Police Department is calling out to the public for any information, any sort of tip, they may have about a suspect linked to a fatal attack in East Nashville. Initially thought to be a hit-and-run death, the incident occurred early Monday near the South 5th Street and Russell Street intersection.

According to MNPD, officers responded to the report of a possible hit-and-run, but further investigation allowed authorities to conclude it was a homicide. Surveillance footage from the early morning of Tuesday, October 22, does much to enlighten: in the video, 59-year-old James Sutton is seen exiting his vehicle when an unidentified individual approaches him from behind and forcefully shoves him to the ground.

According to authorities, this surprise attack left Sutton suffering from traumatic injuries to the head and spine. Sutton was transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. MNPD claims that contrary to earlier assumptions, Sutton was not hit by a vehicle, thus ruing the possibility of a hit-and-run attack.

The police want anyone with knowledge of the identity or whereabouts of that individual to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-772-7463. Tips are anonymous, and participants in homicide cases may qualify for a $5,000 reward.

MNPD is requesting that anyone with information about the identity or whereabouts of the suspect to contact them so that they may facilitate justice towards Sutton’s family and loved ones as the investigation continues.
