Man indicted for first degree murder of baby in Murfreesboro

A first-degree murder and aggravated child neglect indictment was confirmed today after police said an infant died last year in Murfreesboro.

According to a report by Murfreesboro Police Department, officers were called to a home on Bishop Street on Oct. 24, 2023, in response to a report of an unresponsive child. The baby was taken from that home for Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The case prompted investigation by the Murfreesboro Police’s Criminal Investigations Division Special Victims Unit. 

Findings of the investigation were presented in the October session of the Rutherford County Grand Jury, which led to a sealed indictment charging Scott W. Smith with both first-degree murder and aggravated child neglect.

Smith will be appearing in court on Monday, October 28. No information will be provided yet regarding the case because it is still under investigation.
