Two men were shot when a car wreck turned deadly this morning in Memphis’s Cherokee neighborhood, police said.
The incident occurred at about 12:45 a.m. at the junction of Cherokee Boulevard and Prescott Boulevard. Responding officers found one man with two apparent gunshot wounds-one in the left arm and the other near the shoulder.
A second man arrived later at a hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, police reported. Another of the victims described how the shooting began as he was trying to attend to a driver who had become involved in the accident.
He explained that gunfire started between the driver and two men who drove to the scene, dressed in casual clothes, driving a gold Mercedes-Benz. According to the victim, the two parties exchanged up to 15 shots.
The man who came to the hospital in a private vehicle said he had come to help after witnessing the crash when someone in a silver Infiniti opened fire on him. He added that two men approached him at the scene, went through his pockets but denied opening fire, stating he does not own a gun.
The researchers discovered a handgun at the junction, and investigations are still undergoing to get the complete details of circumstances leading to the incident.
