Phoenix Police fatally shoot trespassing suspect after he grabbed Taser

Undercover officers shot and killed a man late Sunday night after he allegedly took one of their Tasers away from them during an arrest attempt.

The incident started about 8 p.m. when officers responded to a trespassing call at a business near Glendale and 35th avenues. The suspect was reported to be armed with a knife, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

When officers arrived, the male ran into a stockroom and climbed atop a built-in freezer. When ordered to get down, the suspect conformed but tried to flee when officers attempted to take him into custody.

In the fight that ensued, officers used a Taser, which did little good. In the physical struggle, the man got one of the officers’ Tasers and is said to have pointed it at the officer.

Officers then opened fire. Even as they began rendering emergency aid right away, fire department personnel who arrived pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name wasn’t released.

The two officers sustained injuries in the scuffle and were released after treatment at a local hospital.

The case is under investigation by the authorities.
