Pedestrian killed in crash on Broadway crosswalk

The Metro Nashville Police Department reports that a 58-year-old pedestrian was run over and killed by a car early Saturday morning in downtown Nashville.

The pedestrian was identified as Michael O’Connell and was walking at the intersection of 12th Avenue South and Broadway about 1 a.m. when he was hit by a Dodge pickup truck. Police report that the pedestrian walk signal had appeared for O’Connell at the time of the accident.

According to cops, the driver of a truck driven by a 36-year-old from Waverly, driven on Broadway, turned left but did not yield on O’Connell. Eyewitnesses who witnessed the accident say the driver was speeding and “spinning the truck’s tires” just before impact.

O’Connell was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver fled briefly but returned to the scene shortly thereafter. He appeared to be in his right mind and was cited for “failure to yield the right of way.”

Authorities have yet to release any additional information, and the investigation is ongoing.
