FCPS student taken to hospital after gym light fixture falls

FCPS student taken to hospital after gym light fixture falls

A Tates Creek High School student in Lexington was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after a gym light fixture fell on him during physical education class.

It happened because “a ball struck the light fixture,” said a letter from the school’s principal to parents. The student was transported to the hospital, where he was being treated; his current condition was not immediately made known.

He wrote in a letter that communication over the incident was delayed so that the efforts to support the student and the family were put first as other safety information concerning the school’s facilities was being collected.

Since the incident, the maintenance staff and contractors have been dealing with the gym’s safety. All classes and activities in the gym areas are relocated until further notice.

FCPS released this statement about the incident:

‘Maintaining safety on all FCPS campuses and in all of our buildings is a priority. We have been in touch with and are closely monitoring the recovery of the injured TCHS student. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their family. There was a swift response made by our campus administrators and maintenance teams. They have been working to ensure the building and facilities are safe.’

This is an ongoing investigation, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
