Susan Smith in prison for killing 2 young sons caught talking to documentary filmmaker

Susan Smith, serving a life term for the 1994 murders of her two small children, has been convicted of a new disciplinary infraction. The South Carolina Department of Corrections said that Smith recently has been found guilty of speaking with a documentary filmmaker about her crimes, thus violating prison regulations.

Noting that Smith agreed to provide the filmmaker with personal contact information for friends, family members, and victims, including her ex-husband, authorities said she was paid money into her inmate account for doing so.

Inmates in South Carolina aren’t allowed to participate in telephonic or in-person interviews, but they can exchange correspondence through mail letters. This offense led to Smith losing her privileges to have a telephone and her tablet for 90 days, effective October 4. This is Smith’s first disciplinary action since 2015. She previously served time for drug use as well as improper relationships with a corrections guard.

She is being held at Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina, and is eligible for parole in November. Smith received nationwide attention in 1994 for a false report that her two sons – Michael, 3, and Alex, 1 – had been stolen away by a carjacker nine days before the truth came out: Smith drove her car into a lake with her two toddlers still in it, killing them.
