On Monday, in the center of a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in Phoenix, a group of elite Latino leaders convened to lend their backing to U.S. Representative Rubén Gallego in his pursuit of the U.S. Senate seat.

Gallego, a Democrat, will most likely go up against Kari Lake, the front-runner in Tuesday’s Republican primary against Mark Lamb. Prominent figures attended the demonstration, including state and local government leaders, MoŁnica Villalobos of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Corporation Commissioner Anna Tovar.

Some, like Republican immigration attorney Yasser Sanchez, broke down in tears, discussing the experience of being an immigrant and how the Republican Party does not accommodate people like him.

Next up was Luisa Ybañez, who discussed Gallego’s difficulties and how they are exacerbated by the thousands or even hundreds of thousands of immigrants in Arizona and the United States  .

“Ruben Gallego is the son of immigrants just like me,” Ybañez remarked, describing the impoverished upbringing of Gallego by a single mother who had to work odd jobs to support the family  . He pays attention to what we have to say and understands that working families need his assistance.  “

What moved me wasn’t necessarily what Ybañez said . It was the way she had phrased it..

With a simple win against Democratic U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego on Tuesday, Kari Lake is hoping to secure the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Arizona. This might lead to a close contest for a seat that could be critical in determining Senate control.

Republicans will also have to pick between a group of incumbents who have resisted former President Donald Trump’s claims about the 2020 election and challengers who contend it was rigged in Maricopa County, which encompasses metro Phoenix and 60% of Arizona’s voters.

Prior to the decisive 2024 election, when Arizona will play a pivotal role in the struggle for control of the White House and Congress, the primary will shed light on the state’s direction.

Gallego is the only candidate seeking the Democratic nomination for the Senate. Trump told fans to “go vote” during a phone rally with Lake on Monday night. “She is outstanding. She won’t disappoint us. Kari Lake is just going to be the best, in my opinion. Nobody is going to be superior.
