An early-morning shooting in Phoenix has led to a multi-agency investigation and a dramatic highway pursuit that ended with a barricade situation near Tucson. Police in Phoenix received word just before 2 a.m. when two people, a man and a woman, stopped their vehicle near 27th Avenue and McDowell Road to get help. The two had been shot while trying to drive themselves to the hospital.

Authorities believe that the shooting took place at a house somewhere between 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road. The two victims were taken to a hospital; officials characterize their injuries as not life-threatening.

After the first incident, police began looking for the suspect’s vehicle, which was spotted traveling south on Interstate 10. When DPS troopers attempted to execute a traffic stop, the driver would not comply, and they continued their pursuit southward until it came to a stop in the general area of Cortaro Road near Marana, just outside of Tucson.

Then, the suspect locked himself inside the car, then kicked off a stand-off that lasted for several hours. I-10 in the area was shut down in both directions, and the police issued public warnings to keep people away from the area.

DPS confirmed the suspect was taken into custody just after 7:30 a.m. without incident. The immediate threat is past, but the Phoenix police, DPS, and other agencies continue to investigate motives and circumstances of the shooting.

As authorities work to piece together the events of what led to the double shooting and subsequent pursuit, traffic is once again flowing on I-10.
