Suspect apprehended following crashes and officer-involved shooting in Tucson

A 16-year-old driver was arrested Thursday, October 31, 2024, after a high-speed pursuit across Pima County, involving multiple car-to-car collisions. The chase began about 3:45 p.m. when a deputy witnessed a vehicle commit a traffic offense near South Houghton Road and East Tanque Verde Road.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department states that the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not oblige and sped away while nearly running over an officer. In a short space of time, the suspect’s vehicle was located at a convenience store located at South Houghton and East Drexel Road where it crashed with several parked cars before it sped off again.

The driver continued to cause accidents at intersections on the chase route. Deputies tracked the vehicle to a residential neighborhood near East Old Spanish Trail and South Galileo Lane. The suspect tried to flee again as deputies arrived, and one deputy fired his weapon in the encounter.

The chase ended at the entrance of the Rocking K Ranch Community, where the teenager was apprehended without further incident. The suspect sustained minor injuries and was treated on-site. Fortunately, no deputies or bystanders were injured during the pursuit.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is conducting the investigation, with Oro Valley Police Department leading on the officer-involved shooting. PCSD will independently investigate the pursuit and subsequent crashes.
