Russia releases WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan in prisoner swaps

The sudden removal of up to nine Russian activists and one American citizen from Russian prisons in recent days, along with the disappearance of other Russian inmates from U.S. prison databases, have raised rumors that a significant prisoner exchange involving Russia, the United States, and several other European nations may be underway.

Although no government officials in Moscow, Washington, or anywhere else have addressed the prospect of a swap, observers on August 1 noted indications of what would be the biggest of its sort since the end of the Cold War.

However, BNO news posted on X, “U.S. and allies are releasing several Russian prisoners as part of a swap but details are not yet known, according to Bloomberg. Americans Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan are currently flying out of Russia.” which has led to people believing that the above news could possibly be true.

Defense attorneys for a number of well-known individuals detained in Russian prisons have stated that their clients’ whereabouts are unknown, a circumstance that frequently occurs when prisoners are transferred. Opposition activists Vladimir Kara-Murza and Ilya Yashin are a couple of them.
