Phoenix Police Arrested Man Accused of Shooting at Officers During Welfare Check

Police say that during a welfare check on a north Phoenix home on Tuesday morning, a man opened fire on them and was taken into custody. According to Phoenix police and Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office inmate records, Matthew Beckner-Gonzalez, 36, is being charged with suspicion of aggravated assault on an officer, discharging a handgun within city limits, endangering public safety, and resisting arrest.

At approximately eight in the morning, while responding to a welfare check complaint at a residence near North 35th and West Potter roads, two patrol officers were greeted at the door by Beckner-Gonzalez, according to the police. Officers saw a gun in Beckner-Gonzalez’s hand and gave him commands before drawing their weapons, according to the police.

According to the authorities, Beckner-Gonzalez returned fire into the house after firing multiple shots towards the cops. Beckner-Gonzalez was taken into custody and then placed into jail after officers ordered him to leave his residence, according to the police report. Police said that no officers were hurt.

According to jail records, Beckner-Gonzalez was being held on a $200,000 bond as of Wednesday morning, with a scheduled court appearance for August 13.
