Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) detectives have arrested two men, concluding an investigation into a deadly October shooting near Tennessee State University’s (TSU) homecoming celebrations.
Corey D. Johnson, 31, and Kiyahn Hayes-Woods, 23, were detained Wednesday afternoon without incident in the 300 block of Berry Street, according to an MNPD press release. Hayes-Woods was reportedly armed at the time of arrest.
The arrests stem from an October 12 shootout on Jefferson Street near 27th Avenue North, where five men with suspected gang ties exchanged gunfire amid the homecoming festivities. The incident occurred around 5 p.m., leaving 24-year-old Vonquae Johnson fatally injured. He later died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Johnson faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, with bond set at $80,000. Hayes-Woods, whose bond is $94,000, was charged with felony reckless endangerment and unlawful gun possession by a convicted felon.
These arrests follow those of Marquez Davis and DeAnthony Brown, both 24, who were detained in October. Both men were charged with criminal homicide in Johnson’s death. Additionally, Davis faces federal charges for firearm possession by a convicted felon.
MNPD reports that these arrests are part of a continuing effort to address gun violence and gang activity in the community.
