Man found dead in Watterson Expressway crash with gunshot wound identified

A man found dead after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 264 in Louisville last week has been identified as 36-year-old William McPheeters, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD).

The incident took place on the afternoon of October 31, when Sixth Division officers were called to the scene of a serious crash near Breckenridge Lane. LMPD’s initial investigation revealed that McPheeters was driving eastbound on I-264 when he lost control of his vehicle. The car rolled over and eventually came to a stop upside down.

First responders and several bystanders attempted life-saving measures, but McPheeters was pronounced dead at the scene. During a closer examination, authorities discovered that McPheeters had suffered a gunshot wound, which the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office later confirmed as the cause of death.

However, it remains uncertain whether the gunshot wound occurred before or during the crash. The coroner’s office has yet to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death, leaving the manner of death officially pending.

LMPD detectives are actively investigating the case and seeking information that might help clarify how the gunshot wound factored into McPheeters’ fatal crash. Authorities are urging anyone with details on the incident to contact Louisville Metro Police or reach out anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
