The Fields know to follow their cross guard and keep a cautious eye out for incoming cars when they head to Approximately 42,000 students from Fayette County Public Schools will return for their fall semester on Wednesday. Many people can’t wait for school to start.
Harrison Fields, who will shortly enter kindergarten, expressed his excitement about making new friends.
His sister, Harper Fields, a second grader, added, “I’m looking forward to learning some new things and having a great year.”
Glendover Elementary on Wednesday. Everyone in the community should be aware of these safety precautions, according to Lexington Police.
“We need to exercise extra caution because they are running, wearing a backpack, and are not paying attention,” said Lexington Police traffic department Lieutenant Chris Van Brackel.
Parents should remind their children, says Van Brackel:
- Before crossing the street, look both ways and make eye contact with vehicles.
- At a crosswalk or the corner, cross the street.
- Use paths or sidewalks wherever you can.
- When you’re approaching traffic, keep your head up and put down your phone.
Van Brackel declared, “That car is always going to win when we meet at the same place at the same time if I don’t have any protection.”
He counsels drivers to be especially alert in school zones and near crosswalks. Additionally, he advises reviewing the school bus stop arm legislation, which are available here.
“Sadly, there are times when a collision occurs and the witness says, ‘I never saw them, they darted right out in front of me.’ Children will do that, so you have to be alert and prepared for it and avoid distractions.”
