Kentucky Senator Johnnie Turner has passed away, according to a Facebook post from his family. The senator had been hospitalized since September 15 due to serious injuries sustained in a lawn mower accident at his home in Harlan County. A post was made on this FB page on Wednesday morning.

Dustin Isaacs, a spokesperson with the Senate Majority’s Office, provided an update on Senator Turner’s recovery. “We spoke again with Senator Turner’s family this morning for an update and remain encouraged by his progress. He recently had his first physical therapy assessment, is physically improving, and remains in good spirits. Although he’s still in some pain and remains in the ICU, we’re confident in the strength and resilience he continues to exhibit. We’re all optimistic about his continued positive progress and ask all Kentuckians to keep him and his family in their prayers.”

UPDATE: Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Dustin Isaacs provided another update, saying, “We remain in communication with the Turner family about the recovery of our dear friend and colleague. We’re pleased to report that Johnnie made much progress on Tuesday when he could sit upright and communicate, and he continues to improve today. While he remains in ICU and in some pain, we are grateful for this positive progression. We ask all Kentuckians to continue to pray for his full recovery and for the comfort of his loved ones as they stand beside him.”

Senate President Robert Stivers provided a status report on Senator Turner, stating, “Sen. Johnnie Turner remains in critical but stable condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. I’ve been in touch with Johnnie’s family, who are with him at the hospital. The family requests prayers for a speedy recovery.”

Senator Johnnie L. Turner was flown out for medical treatment following a serious accident involving a lawn mower that he was operating at his home in the Sukey Ridge area. Kentucky State Police reported that a call was received around 8:00 p.m., indicating that the senator drove his riding lawn mower into the deep end of an empty pool. Kentucky State Police Troopers, Sunshine Fire Department, and Lifeguard EMS all responded to the scene.
