Tempe police say a juvenile driver is expected to be charged in a high speed police pursuit early Friday morning that ended in a crash and fire near Loop 202 and Scottsdale Road. The vehicle was first spotted by officers driving at extreme speeds and making dangerous maneuvers, prompting them to initiate a traffic stop.

Police pursued the driver’s vehicle when he refused to stop and sped away. The chase was called off due to safety concerns when the vehicle was just before Loop 202, but officers soon found the car crashed into a pole just beyond the Scottsdale Road exit. Such a collision caused the vehicle to catch fire and sat nearby utility lines ablaze.

First responders pulled the teen from the burning car and brought him to a local hospital for minor injuries. Police said the driver will be charged with several crimes when he is released from the hospital.
