Republicans are furious with Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear over remarks he made on MSNBC Tuesday morning about JD Vance’s prior rape remarks. Less than twelve hours after leaving the DNC stage in Chicago, Beshear made an appearance on “Morning Joe” on Tuesday morning. He brought up Vance’s earlier remarks that a rape-related pregnancy is “inconvenient,” highlighting his conviction that the abortion laws in Kentucky should provide an exception for rape, incest, and nonviable pregnancies.
“JD Vance calls pregnancy resulting from rape ‘inconvenient,'” Beshear stated. Traffic can be a hassle. Make him go through this, please. Someone is being injured, someone is being violated. Then informing them that there are no other options. That is unworthy of any humane or decency test.” Watch the entire interview with Beshear here. Vance and other Republicans seized onto his remarks, claiming Beshear was “wishing” for someone in Vance’s family to be raped. Donald Trump’s running mate, Vance, answered on X:
What on earth is this? Why would Andy Beshear want someone in my family to be raped? What a repulsive individual.” A statement was also made on Tuesday by the Trump-Vance campaign: “After speaking on the DNC main stage last night, Harris campaign surrogate Governor Andy Beshear went on national television this morning and explicitly called for a member of Senator Vance’s family to be raped,” claimed a spokesperson. “His remarks are abhorrent and repulsive, and they have no place in American politics. Regardless of political differences, we demand that Kamala Harris swiftly retract Governor Beshear’s remarks and show that this kind of violent rhetoric has no place in our public conversation.”
Later on Tuesday, Beshear made an appearance on MSNBC to elucidate his remarks. According to him, Vance was attempting to portray himself as a victim. Beshear remarked, “[Vance’s criticism] is absurd and a diversion.
“As a guy, JD Vance will never have to deal with any of this directly. He’s trying to make himself the victim because he knows he and Donald Trump are so wrong on this topic. It’s unfortunate that he lacks the empathy necessary to see himself in a different situation and comprehend the significance of making exceptions. Of course, I would never want someone to suffer harm.”
