Driver charged after deadly wrong way DUI crash in Murfreesboro

Charges for vehicular homicide and DUI were filed against 23-year-old Lora Allison Tenpenny after the head-on collision she caused Thursday evening on South Church Street in Murfreesboro. Killed in the accident was a 28-year-old man whose vehicle was a BMW.

According to Murfreesboro police, Tenpenny was traveling south in the northbound lanes when she struck another vehicle, causing her Jeep to flip. She and her passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries; both were hospitalized at a local facility for treatment.

A Williamson County deputy, off-duty at the time, said he had seen Tenpenny’s vehicle and suspected that she might be driving under the influence just moments before the crash. He witnessed the collision firsthand. With Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Captain Karl Daigle, who is also off-duty for his part in the rescue, rushed to the wreckage to make himself available to help in any way possible in helping crash victims.

They reached in and pulled the BMW’s driver out of his vehicle and started doing CPR until rescue workers could take over. Too late, though: the driver of the BMW was killed outright in the collision.

Tenpenny was arrested and charged with multiple counts, including vehicular homicide, felony reckless endangerment, and DUI, following release from medical care. She is out on $72,000 bond pending her next court appearance.
