Brush Fire Burns 13K Acres North of Fountain Hills, Prompting Highway Closures

On Sunday afternoon, a brush fire north of Fountain Hills caused the closure of several highways. 

ArizonaDOT posted on X, “SR 87 SB before Bush Mnt Highway: The right lane is blocked between mileposts 213 to 210 due to a brush fire.”

The Sand Stone caused the southbound lanes of State Route 87 to close near Payson about 4:30 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. From SR 188 to Bush Highway, the highway is now closed.

The time when the southbound lanes would reopen was not specified. As of 7 p.m. on Sunday, there was no impact on the northbound lanes. About 13,000 acres had burned in the Sand Stone fire as of Sunday night.

Authorities report that, as of Thursday, the fire has not been contained at all. Currently, a portion of State Route 87, popularly known as the Beeline Highway, is closed due to the fire. The Sand Stone Fire, which began on July 25 and is presently 14 miles northeast of Fountain Hills, is being battled by fire crews. As of Sunday night, 15,000 acres were burned due to the fire.
