Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigns from Dhaka, flees the country to undisclosed location in military helicopter

After receiving an order from the army to step down amid increasing violence that has cost over 300 deaths, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister of Bangladesh. She had 45 minutes to do so. To reestablish order, the army has declared its intention to form a provisional administration.

After fierce fighting on Monday, Hasina flew aboard a military plane to an unidentified place that is thought to be Agartala. That being said, there’s no word on a planned landing at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport.

She wanted to speak to the country, but her security team rushed her out of the country due to the escalating violence.

Shesh Paul Vaid posted on X, “Bangladesh Prime Minister #SheikhHasina resigns from Dhaka, flees the country to undisclosed location in military helicopter. Situation grim. Government of India should take up with Army Chief of Bangladesh for security of 13 million Hindus who have become the target of the rioters.”

Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman announced the military’s intention to establish a provisional administration and demanded a stop to the demonstrations in a broadcast announcement. He pledged to respond to the demonstrators’ requests and guarantee public safety.

Sunday’s conflict between police and large-scale protestors using rubber bullets and tear gas resulted in over a thousand injuries and approximately 100 deaths. As demonstrators broke into the Prime Minister’s official Dhaka mansion, Gonobhaban, the unrest intensified. At that point, Hasina, who began her sixth term this year, had already boarded a military chopper with her sister Sheikh Rehana to depart the premises.

The current unrest started as a result of complaints about a government employment quota system that reserved jobs for the families of veterans of the 1971 war against Pakistan.
