According to reports, Bangladesh has banned a number of well-known social media sites, including YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok. Since its announcement on Friday, August 2, this action has essentially limited access to these popular social networks across the country.
Through its official X account, Global Eyes News first announced the ban, indicating that access to these social media networks would be restricted throughout Bangladesh starting on Friday.
Globe Eye News posted on X, “Bangladesh bans Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and YouTube in the country.” The Bangladeshi government’s decision was made in response to Turkey’s announcement earlier that day of a similar ban on Instagram.
Bangladesh has prohibited meta platforms on previous occasions. The suspension of Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, in July was preceded by this most recent restriction. The countrywide unrest over quota revisions that was observed earlier in the day prompted the early stoppage.
Turkey’s national communications authority announced on Friday that it had blocked access to the Instagram social media network without providing an explanation, following allegations of censorship against the US firm by a senior Turkish official.
Without providing any other information, the BTK communications regulator stated on its website that “instagram.com has been blocked by a decision on the date of 02/08/2024.” AFP journalists confirmed that numerous Turkish users had reported on the X platform that they were unable to refresh their Instagram feeds.
