An apparently routine trip for one Army Ranger earlier this month resulted in a heroic moment and the rescue of a man who was trapped in a burning car.
On August 9, Master Sgt. Joe Thach was traveling along Interstate 5 in Tacoma, Washington, when he observed billowing smoke ahead of him. Shortly after, he came upon a burning car that had collided with a barrier on the roadway.
“When I noticed that no one had stopped to assist, I reasoned that, if not me, then who?” “That’s somebody’s son, brother, or dad and immediately it’s something that I thought that I would want someone to do that for someone I cared about,” Thach said in an interview with various channels.
As the fire spread, Thach—who has 18 years of Army experience—jumped into action and used his expertise and background to extricate the man from the wrecked vehicle.
As Thach pulled the man away from the flaming car, he learned that the man had served in the military as well.
Thach said sources, “I remember he reached out to me and grabbed my hand and he said like I really need a brother right now.” “I took hold of his hand and reassured him that everything would be alright, knowing full well that he was having a difficult day and that I was here to support him.”
