The trial of Richard Allen for the murders at Delphi is experiencing a jury selection process. A total of 10 jurors are selected by the end of Monday.
Four charges of murder are baring Allen, as they have committed the murders of Abby Williams and Libby German in February 2017 near Indiana’s Monon High Bridge. His arrest took place in October 2022, which was several years after a thorough probe.
The jury selection began here with over 300 potential jurors summoned from Allen County. Six of those are women, and four are men; the jury will consist of eight women and four men, with two additional jury seats and four alternate positions remaining available. The final jury will be sequestered for up to a month during the trial.
The jury selection process has had some strange moments, with one prospective juror dismissed because he said he had psychic abilities and another excused when he said he disliked the color green.
During Monday’s session, Carroll County Prosecutor Nick McLeland named Allen as the “Bridge Guy,” a figure seen in Libby German’s phone footage on the day of the murders. Prosecution indicated key evidence – a round retrieved near the girls’ bodies that allegedly came from Allen’s gun. They said Allen had confessed multiple times.
Defense lawyer Bradley Rozzi countered that the confessions were coerced, and some evidence was overlooked due to conflicts between federal and local authorities. He even mentioned that they would appeal the case of non-conclusive DNA or phone-related evidence and that of a weapon.
Jury selection continues, and the trial is expected to resume shortly.
