2 dead in wrong-way crash on I 17 near Jefferson Street in Phoenix

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety officials, two people were killed, and one other injured in a tragedy wrong-way crash on Interstate 17 near Jefferson Street early Thursday morning.

The collision was said to have occurred about 2 a.m. in the northbound lanes when one vehicle was going in the opposite direction of traffic. Authorities confirmed that the driver of the car going the wrong direction died in the collision. A passenger in the car that was struck also died; the driver of the struck vehicle, however, suffered severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

The northbound lanes of I-17 were shut down for a few hours, but by early morning, they were reopened to traffic as investigators continued to clear the scene.

So far, no information is available on the identities of those involved. Patrols continue to call on motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially late at night, and to watch out for wrong-way drivers.
