High school students will join Arizona Theatre Company’s expert teaching artists at the Mesa Arts Center as they unleash their creativity and talent in a fun, inspiring and illuminating theatrical training experience.
“Everything I learned from this program makes me better in real life…I’m learning how to be a better person and a better adult,” said Adrianna Cota, two-time Summer on Stage participant.
As the Learning & Education team for the State Theatre of Arizona, we have taken it upon ourselves to reach beyond our major metropolitan areas of Tucson and Phoenix, and to stretch beyond the ordinary in the creation and delivery of learning opportunities. It has long been our mission to extend the reach of our incredible and successful Summer on Stage (SOS) program to include Phoenix and its surrounding communities.
Summer on Stage: Phoenix is a two-week immersive theatre program for high school students that combines classical theatre techniques with modern storytelling. We will develop and hone advanced theatre skills for students who are passionate about the art form and who may be considering theatre as a career path. Using Shakespeare, Commedia dell’arte, Greek and Restoration styles of theatre as the lenses through which young people look at contemporary entertainment gives them the power to be critical consumers and creators who reimagine and reshape the world in which they live.
Our work is active, engaging and never tied to a desk. Through practical work, creative play and physical exploration students will become fluent in these four classical theatre styles and then deploy their new-found expertise through devising and writing of their own contemporary recreations. In exploring the past, we illuminate the present; ATC Learning & Education staff will support students through the Summer on Stage experience to find contemporary relevance in historic technique.
Theatre skills are life skills. Creative and critical thinking, effective communication, collaboration, problem solving and a strong work ethic are all in high demand no matter what career path one may choose. We want our students to be more than college and career ready; we want them to be life ready, equipped with the tools to enact positive and innovative change, to tell new stories, to connect disparate communities. Studying these classical and modern forms of theatre will enable students to recognize the roots that connect our human culture across a vast and varied history of storytelling, and give them the confidence, skills and ambition to add their voice to that history.
