Students around the state learned about and honored first responders and service members on the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
All Peoria Unified School District schools joined in a moment of silence at 9:11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 to pay tribute to those affected by the events on September 11 and the days that followed.
To further commemorate the events on Sept. 11, the following schools will hold their own special events:
Apache Elementary School students in fourth- through eighth grade will be writing a message of hope on a blue paper tile this week. These will be put on a bulletin board in the hall with the quote from the 9/11 memorial in New York, “No Day Shall Erase You from the Memory of Time.” Apache Elementary School is located at 8633 W. Desert Harbor Elementary School will hold the annual “Walk of Honor” at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9. During this event, staff and students will recognize and honor those who serve our community and country by lining the hallways and paying tribute to the guests in attendance. Frontier Elementary School will also hold their annual Heroes Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 for firefighters, police officers, first responders and soldiers. Frontier Elementary School is located at 21258 N. 81st Avenue, Peoria, AZ 85382.
Lake Pleasant Elementary School will hold a short assembly at 8:20 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 and invite families of junior high students to attend. Peoria High School students in the Air Force Junior ROTC will hold a ceremony on the front lawn at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9. Peoria High School is located at 11200 N. 83rd Avenue, Peoria, AZ 85345.
In Kyrene School District, students honored first responders and service members with Patriots’ Day* celebrations on Sept. 9th.
Kyrene family members and community members who have served were encouraged to attend and wear their uniforms to the events.
Students at Kyrene Monte Vista presented honored guests with handmade thank you notes.
Kyrene de los Lagos students participated in a ceremonial flag raising and performed patriotic songs.
C.I. Waggoner students presented Tempe Fire and Police with patriotic artwork thanking them for their service.
