On Monday January 27, 2014, the State Board of Education reelected Yuma County Schools Superintendent, Thomas Tyree, to serve as its president and Greg Miller, the board’s charter school representative, to serve as its vice president in 2014.
Tyree has served in public education for 43 years. Currently, he serves as the Yuma County Superintendent of Schools. He has served as the President of the state’s County School Superintendent’s Association, as well as a trustee of Yuma Regional Medical Center, Chair of the Western Arizona Council of Governments and Board member of the Arizona Risk Retention Trust Board and the Arizona Business Education Coalition.
In addition, he was President of the Arizona School Personnel Administrators Association and served on the National Alumni Board for the University of Arizona and the Arizona Western College Foundation Board. Tyree was appointed to the Arizona State Board of Education by Governor Brewer in April of 2010.
Miller has 27 years of experience in the Civil Engineering, Land Planning, and Construction Industries. Miller is a Co-founder, CEO, Board President, and former Principal of Challenge Charter School, located in Glendale, Arizona.
The school has received numerous recognition, including being named a National Blue Ribbon School, being selected as National Charter School of the Year, and has been labeled as an “Excelling or an A School” for the last 10 years. Miller has served on several committees for the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools, the State Superintendent of School’s Office, and the Rodel Foundation. Miller was appointed to the Arizona State Board of Education by Governor Brewer in April of 2009.
The State Board of Education is responsible for supervising and regulating the conduct of Arizona’s K-12 system. The Board is comprised of 10 gubernatorial appointees and Superintendent of Public Instruction, Hon. John Huppenthal.
