Upward Bound student Algelia Burton just found out that she was awarded a full four-year academic scholarship to attend Tuskegee University in Alabama.

Burton is a senior at South Mountain High School in the Phoenix Union High School District with a 3.7 GPA.  She will be majoring in Nursing.

“She is a very focused, hard-working, and determined student who loves learning,” says Upward Bound Advisor Ruben Saenz.

Upward Bound is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Education, created to provide fundamental support to low-income high school students and/or first-generation students as they prepare to enter college.

SMCC, in partnership with Upward Bound, provides participants with academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages.

Other services include: tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment, SAT/ACT preparation, and work study programs.
