South Mountain’s Law Magnet “Team Red” qualified for the State Mock Trial Tournament to take place on March 22.

The Law Magnet brought three teams to the Regional Tournament March 1 at the County Superior Courthouse, and all three teams performed very well with some outstanding presentations.

The Red Team consisting of Markaya Hill, Alexis Carter, Anna Rose Santa Cruz, Angel Velez, Logan Spahr, Jorge Cervantes and Time Keeper Alex Sanchez finished third in their region and qualified for the state tournament.

South finished behind Xavier and Brophy Prep in the region, defeating teams from the Arizona School for the Arts, Desert Mountain, Xavier and Brophy.   Two of Team Red’s members – Alexis Carter and Markaya Hill – won individual awards for their performances.

The competition involved students serving as witnesses and attorneys in a fictional case about privacy violations.   Local attorneys Jason Gellman and Lisa Vandenberg are coaches.  The South Mountain Law Magnet is managed by Matthew Smith and Andrea Sargent.

“I am very proud of what the students accomplished this year. I look forward to “Team Red” competing, and hopefully capturing, the State Title.  They certainly have all the talent and capabilities to achieve that goal,” said Gellman.

The state competition will take place at the Federal Courthouse.
