South Mountain Community College hosts Tools 4 School event

 What6th Annual Phoenix Tools 4 School 2018. This event is free and open to the public for all students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade.

When: July 28, 2018, 7 – 11 a.m.

Where: South Mountain Community College, 7050 S 24th St., Phoenix, AZ 85042

Why: An effort to support local families with the cost of their kids returning to school.

How: An estimated 15,000 backpacks will be given out throughout the day, each filled with a 70 sheet wide ruled notebook, 24 pack of crayons, glue stick, plastic ruler, blunt scissors, pointed scissors, pink erasers and a 15 pack of pencils.

Students can enjoy a carnival atmosphere with attractions, games, swag and prizes provided by The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. Special guest appearances will be made by Baxter, the mascot of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phoenix Suns’ Gorilla, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s staff, aviation advisory board members and mascot Amelia will be in attendance.

Additionally, this year’s event will offer new college prep workshops from Maricopa Community Colleges and Arizona State University to help those on their path to higher education. There will be presentations designed for 7th and 8th grade students at 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 28. Participants in the workshops will also receive South Mountain Community College and ASU swag and be entered into a drawing for other prizes.

 In the past five years, the Phoenix Tools 4 School annual event has impacted over 30,000 students and family members by providing them with a free meal and the supplies needed to ensure a successful start to the academic year.
