Two Sossaman Middle School students topped their peers locally and nationally on the ACT Explore exam given last fall. Ryan Chacon and Elizabeth Day received perfect scores.
The Explore is one of two “pre-ACT” tests given to students. Explore covers math, English, science and reading. It is given to all Higley District eighth graders.
Results of the “pre-tests” are used to help students prepare for the ACT, which colleges and universities use in admission and scholarship decisions.
Of the 430 eighth-grade students at Sossaman, about 10 percent scored in the 98th percentile when compared to other students nationwide and 130 students scored above the benchmark levels, used to indicate college readiness.
“That’s unheard of. We had 26 students score in the 99th percentile,” said assistant principal Renee Kory.
