Four members of the Class of 2014 were awarded scholarships in May from the Ken Vandehei Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Each of the graduates is planning to continue their education at the university level. Luke Petruzzi (Princeton University bound) Haley Evans (University of Arizona bound) and Heber Tenney (Arizona State University bound) each received a $5,000 scholarship award to help reach their future goals.
Ken Vandehei’s daughter, University of Arizona-bound Janelle Vandehei, was also awarded an honorary $5,000 scholarship.
All four were graduates of Williams Field High School.
Since the fund began, $147,000 in scholarships has been awarded to outstanding Higley Unified School District graduates.
The Vandehei family established the scholarships to honor Ken Vandehei, a Gilbert businessman and father who died during a family trip in 2006. He was a strong supporter of education and believed students should have the opportunity to go onto college and university.
Several former Ken Vandehei Memorial Scholarship winners joined in the honoring of the new recipients. Past scholarship winners have graduated from the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Notre Dame College with degrees in business, global health, computer science, biology, biomedical engineering, finance, economics, physiology and public health.
Each year, the scholarships are made possible by the annual Ken Vandehei Memorial Golf Classic. The 2014 Ken Vandehei Memorial Golf Classic will be held Sept. 20, 2014, at Queen Creek’s Las Colinas Golf Club.
