Scottsdale Unified hosts Parent University

Scottsdale Unified School District’s Community Education department will host its 3rd Annual Parent University Project from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday, September 13 at Saguaro High School at 6250 N. 82nd Street in Scottsdale.

Robert Franek, senior vice president-Publisher, The Princeton Review, and author of “The 379 Best Colleges” is this year’s keynote speaker. A recent guest on NBC’s “TODAY” show, Franek will discuss “How to Find and Pay for a ‘Best Fit’ College.”

Scottsdale Unified hosts Parent University ParentUniversity700“We believe that parenting, like many types of education, is a continuing and lifelong process,” said Dr. Chris Thuman, executive director of Community Education and Online Learning. PUP provides parents with research-based knowledge, skills and resources to support their child’s education and increase student achievement. This year, PUP workshops will focus on college and career readiness for all age groups and there be 32 sessions for parents to choose from.

PUP will also have a College Fair for families to gather more information about prospective colleges. Representatives from the following colleges and universities will be available to answer questions. They are:

Argosy University, Arizona State University, Art Institute of Phoenix ,Devry University, Grand Canyon University, Ottawa University, Paradise Valley Community College, Scottsdale Community College, University of Advancing Technology, University of Alabama and University of Arizona.

More than 30 vendor booths will be available at the event to provide parents with additional information about programs being offered. SUSD will also provide information about the following services: International Baccalaureate, Student Services, Nurses, Mental Health, Curriculum, AVID, Community Education and Scottsdale Online Learning.

Free childcare will be offered throughout the event by SUSD’s Kids Club program and the City of Scottsdale Parks and Recreation department. Children will also have the opportunity to explore enrichment classes that are offered during the school year.

There will be student performances and other live entertainment as well as an Art Walk featuring art pieces by Saguaro High School students.

PUP participants will have the opportunity to sample food items, courtesy of SUSD’s Nutritional Services department. There will be an “All American” Mashed Potato bar and an Asian themed bar. Attendees will have the option of trying a variety of toppings on mashed potatoes as well as a variety of Asian style toppings over rice. There will also be various displays featuring Nutritional Services’ daily menu items as well as SMART SNACK information and booth.

The event is being sponsored by The Princeton Review and is open to SUSD and non-SUSD families. There is no cost to attend. For more information and to register for the event, please visit
