Peña Blanca Elementary and Calabasas Middle Schools are being transformed into Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District’s first PreK-8 school, Calabasas School, scheduled to open for classes on August 10, 2015.

Located on one campus at the southern end of the district, Peña Blanca Elementary and Calabasas Middle School opened its doors in 2004 as two schools, one an elementary with pre-kindergarten through fifth grades, and the other a middle school with sixth through 8th grades.

After 11 years of operating as separate facilities, the district has decided to consolidate programs under one organizational roof.

Additionally, the campus will house the district’s Welcome Center for student registration. The Welcome Center opened its doors at the new location on June 1, 2015.

Calabasas School will be the district’s only location to offer half-day pre-kindergarten classes – relocating PreK classes previously offered at San Cayetano with those at Peña Blanca. Classes will be held in morning and afternoon sessions, four days a week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  There will be no PreK classes on Wednesday.

John Fanning, a longtime SCVUSD administrator who left in 2013 to become principal at Sahuarita’s Anza Trail School, is returning to his Rio Rico hometown to run Calabasas School as the school’s principal.  Working with him as assistant principals will be Manuel Carrillo, former Mountain View Elementary Principal, and Rebekah Cabrera, former reading specialist at Anza Trail in Sahuarita.
